The two most popular file back-up services online these days are Carbonite and Mozy. Both offer unlimited file back-up, are relatively easy to use and very inexpensive. Every year millions of people are losing valuable files from their computer that can never again be replaced. These files can range from work documents to picture of your kids to videos, you name it. As nobody wants to lose files that are important, the smart thing to do is to have your files backed-up but you may not be sure who to go with, so what are the differences between Carbonite and Mozy?
Both Carbonite and Mozy are easy to use and can be installed on regular PCs or MACs. There are some key differences in Carbonite and Mozy, some of which follow:
•Free stuff: Both services offer you a way to try them out but they go about it in a different way. Carbonite lets you try their service for free for 15 days and let you sign up with no credit card. This is a great way to ‘test drive’ the service. Mozy lets you back up your files for free up to 2 GB and also doesn’t require a credit card number. Both services offer unlimited storage for a fee, but this is the way each lets you try before you buy.
•Price: Both Carbonite and Mozy are very inexpensive and while their prices are very similar, they do vary just a bit. Carbonite offers a one year subscription for $54.92, a two year subscription for $99.95, and a three year subscription for only $129.95. The more time you buy, the cheaper it is. Mozy’s pricing is $4.95 per month, but they will also give you a bit of a discount if you pay for one year or two years in advance.
•Contact information: Both websites offer phone numbers that can be called but only Carbonite has a toll free number. The phone numbers though do not appear to be for customer service as both Carbonite and Mozy have an e-mail system set up for that. Here again Carbonite has a slight edge as their system for e-mailing customer support is a bit more interactive where Mozy simply has an e-mail address for you to contact.
•Information: Both Carbonite and Mozy go into great detail about how your files are encrypted so that nobody can view them even if they were to steal them and both tell you that they use the same encryption techniques as banks. Both tell you that you can store unlimited files. Carbonite however also goes into detail about how to retrieve your files if you ever need to, where Mozy also does but the information is not as easy to find.
As far as popularity goes, for every user that swears by Carbonite, there will be one that swears by Mozy. The important thing is that you get some type of service to back-up your important files on your computer. For under $5.00 per month there really is no excuse not to protect your computer files from the unknown and unforeseen.
